Suggested reading for new developers

If you are new to web development then I would suggest working through the following pages in order. We are aware that as a newcomer to web development you might not know where to start or what everything means. These guides are scattered throughout the site in various sections and to make life easier we have sorted them into a recommended reading order to help you get started.

Take your time and make sure you have a good grasp of each section before moving on to the next. If you are confused by anything don't forget our forum where you can ask for help. There are no stupid questions so don't be afraid to ask.

  1. Webpage building - the basics So you've decided it's time for you build your first website but you have no idea how to start building it! - well you've come to the right place :)
  2. Document structure As you have already found out HTML is a set of tags normally containing 2 parts...
  3. Tag attributes - ...tags have values attached to them which, if not specified, just use the browsers default settings but you can change them by learning what attibutes are assigned to each tag...
  4. Text formatting - Text formatting tags are dead easy to learn. Lets take a look at some of the common ones.
  5. Sensible file structure - The first step in designing a site should begin on paper. It is important to know what the main subject headings will be. These headings will help you plan your navigation and the directory structure of your site.
  6. Planning your site - Planning is basically working out the structure of the site, how many pages you'll need, how you get from A to B etc...
  7. How to get your webpages onto the web - This guide will take you through the steps required to move your site from your computer onto the World Wide Web for all to see.

We hope you find the above guides useful in getting started. Why not let us know what you think by leaving your comments in our forum.
